Platform settings

Platform settings change how the whole site behaves, for every organisation. You change them here, without a deploy.

To open them, select Platform on the platform console, then select Platform Settings. While maintenance mode is on, you can also select Platform Settings in the bar at the top of every page.

The Platform page has three cards: Platform Invitations, Platform Settings and Feature Flags. Select Back to return to the console.

Turn a setting on or off

  1. Find the setting in the list.
  2. Select its ON or OFF button.

The button changes and you see a message such as “Messages is on.” Each press saves straight away. There’s no Save. Under each setting you see when it was last changed and by whom.

The settings are:

  • Invitation only: new organisations can join only through a Global Admin’s invitation. When it’s off, anyone can create an organisation.
  • Messages: support requests, organisation messages and members’ questions. Turning it off hides them everywhere. Nothing already sent is deleted.
  • Google and Microsoft sign-in: shows Continue with Google and Continue with Microsoft on the sign-in pages. When it’s off, people sign in with an emailed code.
  • Passkeys: people can add a passkey on their Account page and sign in with it. When it’s off, nobody can add one or sign in with one, but people can still remove the passkeys they have.
  • Maintenance mode: see below.

Turn on maintenance mode

Maintenance mode signs out everyone except Global Admins. They see the maintenance page, and new accounts are refused. Global Admins carry on, with a reminder at the top of every page: “Maintenance mode is on: only Global Admins can use the site.”

  1. Select the OFF button on Maintenance mode.
  2. Select Turn On to confirm.

You see “Maintenance mode is on.”

To end it, select the ON button. There’s no confirmation.

If you see “Forced on by MAINTENANCE_MODE in this deployment’s configuration. This switch cannot turn it off; that needs a deploy.”, the switch can’t turn it off. Someone who deploys the site has to change it.

Change the maintenance message

The maintenance page shows a message to the people who are signed out.

  1. Type your message in Maintenance message.
  2. Select Save.

You see “Maintenance message saved.”

To go back to the standard message, select Use Standard Message. You see “The maintenance page will use the standard message.”

Who can do this

Only Global Admins can see or change platform settings. Everyone else is sent to their dashboard.

If something goes wrong

“Email sign-in is off, so turning this off would leave nobody a way to sign in.” Google and Microsoft sign-in can’t be turned off while sign-in by emailed code is off. Email sign-in is on when the site is set up to send email. That is done by whoever deploys the site, not on this page.

“That message is too long.” Shorten the Maintenance message, then select Save.

“Only Global Admins can change platform settings.” You’re not a Global Admin.

“The setting could not be saved.” or “The message could not be saved.” Something went wrong. Try again.
